However, candidates from both parties are weaponizing the data center issue in competitive races, citing voter concerns about rising electricity costs, water depletion, and pollution.1 The Republican Senate Committee warned in an internal memo that Ohio Senator Jon Husted could lose his seat over the data center controversy.1 Democratic challenger Sherrod Brown has attacked Husted in campaign advertisements as "Ohio's data center spokesman."1 In Nevada, Democratic candidate Aaron Ford has demanded the cancellation of a $200 million state tax break for data centers and called for the facilities to cover their own electricity and water costs.1
Trump has also criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott over the issue. Public polling shows significant voter resistance to the projects: a July 2023 Fox News poll found that most registered voters oppose data center construction in their regions,1 while a June 2023 Quinnipiac poll showed approximately 40 percent of voters cited AI data centers as an important issue in House elections.1
