Christopher Bodeen, a veteran Associated Press correspondent who spent decades documenting China's economic, political, and military ascent, died Monday at age 55 from complications of cancer and stroke.1 Born September 9, 1970, in Missouri, Bodeen joined the AP in 1996 and began his career in Taiwan before moving to the Beijing bureau in 2000, where he became known for his incisive analysis and sharp wit in covering China.1
Throughout his career, Bodeen delivered compelling frontline reporting on some of China's most consequential events.1 Following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, he transmitted detailed accounts of the disaster via text message, providing among the first eyewitness testimony of the devastating quake.1 He later reported on high-profile stories, including a 2017 piece examining the carefully constructed image of President Xi Jinping.1 Bodeen held a degree from Tufts University, where he studied history and Asian studies, graduating in 1993.1
