Kay Granger, a pioneering Republican legislator who represented Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly three decades, died Sunday at age 83.[1] Granger made history as the first Republican woman from Texas elected to the House, winning her initial bid for office in 1996.[1] She also became the first woman elected mayor of Fort Worth, serving in that role from 1991 to 1995 before transitioning to Congress.[1]
Throughout her political career, Granger achieved multiple distinctions in her party. When Republicans assumed control of the House in 2023, she became the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee.[1] Granger did not seek reelection in 2024 and ceased casting votes in Washington after July of that year.[1]
Before entering elected office, she worked as a high school teacher for nine years in the Birdville school district and graduated from Texas Wesleyan University in 1965.[1]
