A dangerous criminal phenomenon known as "Com networks" has emerged as a growing threat to young people on social media and gaming platforms.1 These online groups employ intimidation and extortion tactics to force victims into self-harm or harming others, with perpetrators ranging from other youth to adults who derive gratification from inflicting pain on vulnerable targets.1
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett described the threat as "confronting" in June.1 The commissioner stated: "Right now, kids are hurting their siblings, killing their pets or injuring themselves because they are being blackmailed by other youth, teens or adults who enjoy watching the pain of others or are dominating and exploiting the vulnerable."1 In response to the international scope of the problem, Europol removed over 4,000 websites associated with "The Com" network during coordinated enforcement operations.1
Parents and guardians are advised to watch for warning signs including sudden changes in eating or sleeping patterns, withdrawal from social circles, receipt of anonymous gifts, unexplained injuries, harm to pets, and increased use of encrypted communication platforms.1 Additional indicators include doxing and swatting incidents, as well as sudden shifts in behavior or appearance.1
