The UK Home Office has confirmed that at least five survivors of abuse by the late Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed have been identified as victims of human trafficking.[1] The victims endured sexual abuse and trafficking spanning from the 1990s through the years following 2010.[1] Over 400 allegations of sexual misconduct against Al Fayed have been documented, covering the period from 1977 to 2014.[1]
Police have launched Operation Cornpoppy to investigate who may have assisted Al Fayed in committing these crimes, with four individuals having been questioned after 21 months of investigation.[1] One victim, Pelham Spong, recounted being subjected to indecent assault by Al Fayed in Paris in 2008 and being offered an annual salary of €65,000 in exchange for a sexual relationship with him.[1] Al Fayed died in 2023 at the age of 94 without facing any charges.[1] Meanwhile, the Independent Office for Police Conduct is reviewing how police handled complaints between 2018 and 2024.[1]
