Western Australia's ombudsman has launched an independent inquiry into police interactions with Virginia Giuffre prior to her death, following concerns raised by her family regarding the handling of domestic violence allegations.[1] Giuffre died in April 2025 at a farm in Neergabby, near Perth, and her family wrote to the ombudsman in June questioning the appropriateness of police response to her reports of domestic violence and safety concerns involving her husband, Robert Giuffre.[1]
The family's complaint centers on events following January 9, 2025, when Virginia reported domestic violence allegations against Robert to police.[1] Robert was issued a 72-hour police order following this report, but the family questions why he was not charged with assault.[1] A day after the order expired on January 14, 2025, Robert successfully obtained a domestic violence restraining order against Virginia at Perth Magistrates Court, which included restrictions affecting her two children, aged 15 and 17, and was valid for six months.[1] The family contends that ongoing abuse, loss of access to their children, and systemic failures in police response contributed to Virginia's death, and they remain concerned that "the broader risk scenario reported by Virginia was not treated with sufficient urgency."[1] The Western Australia Police has announced an internal review of its handling of the Giuffre case.[1]
