The legislation will undergo formal review three years after taking effect 1. Two coalition backbenchers, Pat Conaghan and Andrew Wallace, crossed the floor to vote against the bill, with Wallace noting it marked his first instance of doing so in a decade-long parliamentary career 1.
As part of the cross-party agreement, the government and opposition have also accelerated removal of the "widow tax" provision from the budget, moving the timeline forward from the originally planned year-end removal 1. In exchange, the opposition has agreed to support the government's legislation targeting reductions to the National Disability Insurance Scheme 1.
