Uganda has unveiled a statue commemorating Yonatan Netanyahu, the brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was killed during a pivotal hostage rescue operation at Entebbe Airport fifty years ago.[1] The rescue mission took place on July 3, 1976, when Israeli special forces successfully freed over 100 hostages in an operation lasting less than 90 minutes.[1] Yonatan Netanyahu was the only Israeli soldier to die in the raid.[1]
The hostages had been held after a French Air France aircraft was hijacked on June 27, 1976, while flying from Tel Aviv.[1] The hijackers demanded $5 million and the release of 53 imprisoned armed militants.[1] The statue, positioned outside the old terminal building at Entebbe International Airport, depicts Yonatan advancing forward while holding a rifle.[1] Three hostages and at least 45 Ugandan soldiers also died during the operation.[1]
Uganda's military leadership described the rescue as one of the most significant events in modern history, emphasizing that relations between the two nations have evolved into a partnership based on mutual trust and cooperation.[1] A decade earlier, Benjamin Netanyahu visited Entebbe and reflected on lessons from his brother, stating that defeating terrorism requires "clarity and courage."[1]
