A Hong Kong court has found the now-dissolved Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Democratic Movements in China—commonly known as the Hong Kong Alliance—and two of its former leaders guilty of inciting subversion of state power under the national security law.12 The defendants, former chairman Lee Cheuk-yan and former vice-chair Chow Hang-tung, were convicted of seditious conduct allegedly committed between July 1, 2020, and September 8, 2021.12 Another former vice-chair, Ho Chun-yan, had previously pleaded guilty in the case.2
The court determined that the Hong Kong Alliance's call to "end one-party rule" constituted an intention to overthrow rather than reform the government.3 Lee and Chow face a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and will be subject to a sentencing hearing the following week.3 Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council responded to the verdict with regret and concern, calling for an immediate cessation of what it characterized as political persecution and demanding the release of those detained in the case.1 The legal proceedings spanned nearly five years, with the Hong Kong Alliance having historically commemorated the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident and advocated for democracy through peaceful means.1
