Australia's new car market is experiencing a historic transformation, with electric and hybrid vehicles now accounting for half of all new vehicle sales.[1] In the June quarter, 330,000 vehicles were sold, of which 167,840 were traditional internal combustion engine cars, with the remainder comprising electric or hybrid models.[1] Battery electric vehicles represented 20 percent of new purchases, hybrids accounted for 17.6 percent, and plug-in hybrids made up 10.6 percent.[1]
The shift accelerates as the federal government's fuel tax relief measure expires this weekend, expected to push unleaded petrol prices above 2 Australian dollars per liter at most service stations.[1] The end of this relief will increase unleaded petrol prices by up to 17 cents per liter.[1] Between March and June, electric vehicle sales doubled, rising from 34,434 units to 69,414 units.[1] Consumers are adopting electric and hybrid vehicles as a strategy to avoid the anticipated fuel price surge.[1]
Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated that the government will provide cost-of-living relief through alternative measures and cautioned that service stations face stricter regulation and the risk of fines reaching millions of Australian dollars.[1]
