Media entrepreneur Antony Catalano has applied to Byron Bay Council for permission to construct a third luxury residence on adjacent land, which would combine with two previously approved housing developments to create a compound valued at more than $67 million.[1] The proposal involves demolishing an existing family home and building a three-story mansion on the site.[1] The land, encompassing approximately 5,200 square meters, was purchased by Catalano in 2020 for $25 million, with an existing residence acquired in 2023 for $9 million.[1] The planned construction costs are estimated at $29 million for the two houses and $4.1 million for the third residence.[1]
The development application comes as Catalano faces eight criminal charges related to allegations of domestic violence involving his wife, Stefanie, with charges filed on March 13, 2024.[1] The case is expected to return to court in October.[1] In a statement, Catalano acknowledged he has been "struggling with significant mental health and substance abuse issues."[1] Stefanie submitted a statement of no complaint to Victoria Police in early June and indicated she would not give evidence against him.[1]
