Five teenagers have been charged following an attack on a 60-year-old man who intervened during an alleged robbery in Melbourne's western suburb of Sunshine. The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. on Hampshire Road, when the man attempted to assist a shop worker who became caught up in a confrontation with the youths.[1] The victim is currently in critical condition at Royal Melbourne Hospital.[1]
The group comprised three boys aged 12, 13, and 15, along with two 14-year-old girls.[1] Four of the teenagers were arrested near the scene, while the 12-year-old boy was apprehended at his home.[1] All five have been charged with riot, violent affray, intentionally causing serious injury, and intentionally causing injury.[1] The assault was captured on surveillance footage.[2]
Victoria's newly appointed Premier Ben Carroll highlighted that new legislation permits defendants to be banned from retail, fast food, and transport workplaces for up to 12 months, with breaches potentially resulting in a maximum of two years imprisonment or a fine of up to AUD 50,000.[1]
