Environmental concerns are mounting as South Australia's giant squid population has plummeted to its lowest level since records began in 1998, with an estimated 1,811 individuals counted this year compared to approximately 63,000 in 2025.1 Environment Minister Emily Bourke described the population figures as "significantly low and extremely concerning."1 Mike Steer, executive director of Sardi, warned that "squid die after one year of life, and the juveniles that hatch subsequently will make up next year's population, so next year's survey will be absolutely critical."1
Wildlife disease management efforts are intensifying across southeastern Australia as authorities work to contain avian influenza.
