A 25-year study of over 22,000 British adults has revealed that men with heart disease face substantially elevated risks of developing and dying from cancer compared to their female counterparts.1 Among participants who developed cardiovascular disease during the research period or within the following three decades—approximately 11,000 individuals—men showed a lifetime cancer risk of 17.3 percent, while women's risk stood at 12.8 percent.1 In contrast, men without heart disease had a cancer risk of 10.2 percent, and women without the condition faced an 8.2 percent risk.1
The research, published in the European Heart Journal, identifies smoking, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption as the primary factors driving this increased cancer susceptibility among cardiac patients.1 Lung cancer and esophageal cancer emerged as the malignancies posing the greatest risk, alongside elevated dangers from gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and non-melanoma skin cancer.1 According to Dr. Tiberiu Pana, one of the researchers, "We found that cancer incidence and death were higher in people with cardiovascular disease than in those without."1
