China's meteorological authorities have detected an intensifying El Niño climate phenomenon across the Pacific Ocean that is expected to potentially become the strongest on record in 150 years, potentially surpassing the 1997–1998 event in strength.[1] The equatorial central and eastern Pacific reached El Niño conditions in May, and by July had entered the monitoring category for strong El Niño events.[1] The probability of a super strong El Niño event occurring is increasing.[1]
The event is expected to persist for at least until spring of next year, with a duration approaching ten to eleven months.[1] This extended El Niño episode will influence global weather patterns by altering atmospheric circulation regimes.[1] From January to May of this year, coastal ocean surface temperatures in China were 0.52 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991–2020 average for the same period.[1]
