According to Trump, the proposed agreement framework includes the immediate and complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's renunciation of nuclear threats.[2] Trump stated that the United States and Israel have jointly committed to pursuing negotiations on these terms.[2] The conflict began five months earlier when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.[2] Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump on Saturday, expressing concerns about the planned military escalation.[2][3]
Iran's military leadership responded with warnings against further action. The commander of Iran's armed forces Central Command stated that "any country that acts as a shield for America will be engulfed in the flames of war."[4] Kuwait reported being struck by Iranian drones on Saturday, with two vessels attacked near the Strait of Hormuz.[3] The U.S. State Department issued security alerts across the Middle East region, including to Bahrain, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, urging American citizens to remain vigilant and prepare to depart if regional escalation occurs.[2]
