The Western Australian government has committed A$156 million to construct a new train station at Karnup in Perth's suburbs, with construction set to begin in 2028.[1] Transport Minister Rita Saffioti has allocated A$10 million for the planning phase of the project.[1] Premier Roger Cook stated: "As part of our long-term MetroNet vision, we have always planned for a train station here at Karnup, and today we can announce work will start on the Karnup train station project in 2028."[1]
The announcement comes ahead of the Secret Harbour by-election and represents a point of contest between the major parties over the project's funding and timeline. The Opposition Liberal Party has countered with a promise of A$90 million in investment, proposing to commence work in 2029 instead.[1] The Karnup station project was first proposed in 2013 but has experienced prolonged delays.[1]
