The European Union has convened an emergency meeting to address a surge of migrants crossing into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco.[1][2] Approximately 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta on July 30,[1] prompting coordinated action among member states concerned about border security.
Twenty-two EU member states jointly called for strengthened measures at the bloc's external borders in response to the influx.[1] However, the crisis has triggered diplomatic tensions within the EU itself: Italy has suspended the Schengen free-movement agreement with Spain for one month, a position supported by Finland and Denmark.[1] Spain's Prime Minister Sanchez reported that border controls were restored in less than 48 hours following the crossing.[1]
