A federal judge in Minnesota has rejected xAI's attempt to prevent the state from enforcing its ban on non-consensual intimate image generation applications, commonly known as "nudify" apps. Judge Donovan Frank ruled against granting a temporary restraining order that xAI had sought to halt the law's implementation.1
The timing of xAI's legal challenge contributed to the judge's decision. The company submitted its request for a restraining order on July 29, 2026, merely three days before the law was set to take effect on August 1, 2026.1 Frank determined that this substantial delay undermined xAI's argument that the harm posed by the legislation was imminent.1 xAI had contended that Minnesota's prohibition was "overbroad" and that less restrictive alternatives existed to accomplish the state's regulatory objectives.1 Despite this ruling, xAI's broader legal challenge to the ban remains ongoing.1
