Neil Hopper, a prominent vascular surgeon in the United Kingdom, has been struck off the medical register following his conviction on multiple serious charges.[1] In March 2023, Hopper was arrested and subsequently convicted of two counts of fraud and three counts of possessing extreme pornographic material, receiving a sentence of 32 months imprisonment plus a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.[1] The case has raised significant concerns about patient safety, as Hopper performed hundreds of amputation surgeries during his tenure with the National Health Service.
The scandal emerged after Hopper had both his own legs amputated in May 2019, which he claimed resulted from septicemia but which investigators determined was deliberate self-harm motivated by a fetish for amputation.[1] In connection with his injuries, Hopper submitted fraudulent insurance claims to Aviva and Old Mutual Wealth, obtaining compensation totaling £466,653.81, and received approximately £44,000 in disability benefits through false claims.[1] In May 2024, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service recommended his removal from the medical register, citing an "extremely high risk" to public safety.[1]
While Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust released findings in 2024 stating there was "no evidence" that Hopper posed a risk to his patients, the investigation covered only 30 of his cases and took two years to complete.[1] The findings have done little to reassure former patients and their families, particularly following the death of patient Liz Spooner nine days after undergoing an 11 to 12-hour amputation procedure performed by Hopper in July 2022; her daughter Faye has questioned both the duration of the surgery and Hopper's involvement in her mother's care.[1]
