At 27 years old, Australian actor Sherry-Lee Watson is stepping into a major leading role as the young horse breaker Nell in Netflix's newly adapted drama series My Brilliant Career, set to premiere on August 13.[1] The production, which adapts the 1901 novel to the screen, represents South Australia's most expensive television drama to date with a budget of approximately AUD 17 million.[1]
Watson's path to this milestone has been marked by both professional achievement and personal cost. Rising from Alice Springs through scholarship opportunities at an elite boarding school, she built her career through roles in series including Heartbreak High and Thou Shalt Not Steal, the latter earning her an AACTA Award nomination for Best Female Actor in a Television Drama.[1] Yet even as her screen work has expanded, Watson has felt the limitations of the medium. "Screen is amazing, and I'm so grateful for everything I've gotten out of it, but I'm not satisfying that hunger to interrogate text and to go deep into characters," she reflected.[1]
Concurrent with the series launch, Watson is also performing in the stage play Break of Day at Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre, beginning August 7.[1] Looking ahead, Watson has indicated plans to return to her hometown after the theatrical run concludes, noting that she has been away from home for more than a decade.[1]
