Researchers at the University of Missouri have discovered that maintaining a consistent daily schedule correlates with lower levels of physical pain and depressive symptoms, particularly among older adults experiencing insomnia.[1] The study, involving 67 older adults—37 of whom had insomnia—found that participants who adhered to fixed times for waking, eating, socializing, and bedtime reported better physical and mental health indicators regardless of their sleep quality.[1]
According to researcher Eunjin Lee Tracy, "Those who reported having a regular daily routine had lower levels of body pain and fewer depressive symptoms compared to those without a regular routine, regardless of sleep quality."[1] The research suggests that maintaining schedule consistency synchronizes the body's internal clock, thereby supporting overall health improvement.[1]
The findings were published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, Volume 49, Issue 3, in 2026.[1] The research is particularly relevant given that approximately half of adults aged 60 and older experience insomnia symptoms, according to data from the National Institute on Aging.[1]
