Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja has been confirmed dead following an avalanche that struck his expedition team on Broad Peak in Pakistan.[1] The avalanche occurred at approximately 9 a.m. local time on Thursday at an elevation of 6,579 meters (21,585 feet), between camp two and camp three on the peak's west ridge.[1] The incident claimed the lives of at least four climbers out of eleven caught in the disaster, including Purja and his climbing partner Pur Bahadur Gurung.[1] Two other confirmed casualties were identified as Nima Sherpa and Nadhira Alharthy, along with Mallory Geis.[1] Several team members, including Chinese climber Wang Zhong and high-altitude workers from Pakistan and Nepal, remain missing.[1]
Purja was leading the mountaineering expedition when the avalanche struck.[1] In 2019, he set a remarkable record by summiting all fourteen peaks above 8,000 meters in just over six months.[1] He also led the first winter expedition to successfully summit K2.[1]
