Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja has been confirmed dead following an avalanche that struck his expedition team on Broad Peak in Pakistan.1 The avalanche occurred at approximately 9 a.m. local time on Thursday at an elevation of 6,579 meters (21,585 feet), between camp two and camp three on the peak's west ridge.1 The incident claimed the lives of at least four climbers out of eleven caught in the disaster, including Purja and his climbing partner Pur Bahadur Gurung.1 Two other confirmed casualties were identified as Nima Sherpa and Nadhira Alharthy, along with Mallory Geis.1 Several team members, including Chinese climber Wang Zhong and high-altitude workers from Pakistan and Nepal, remain missing.1
