Hundreds of thousands of people lined Amsterdam's canals on Saturday to watch the annual Pride boat parade, a centerpiece event of World Pride festivities.[1] The procession featured 80 elaborately decorated boats sailing through the waterways.[1]
The celebration took on heightened security measures following a deadly attack in Berlin just one week prior.[1] That incident left one person dead and 29 wounded when suspect Abdul Ballout drove a van into a crowd and attacked bystanders with a knife before being shot by police.[1] Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema stated that necessary steps would be taken to ensure safety during the parade, with police motorboats patrolling the canals and helicopter surveillance in place.[1]
Among the participants was Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, an openly gay official, who attended the parade wearing a white shirt, black life jacket, and gold chain.[1] The event also marked the 80th anniversary celebration of COC, a Dutch LGBTQ+ rights organization.[1] In a related development, an Amsterdam court handed down a sentence of 40 community service hours to a man convicted of using discriminatory language during Pride activities, a verdict delivered the day before the parade.[1]
