Widespread wildfires swept through multiple European nations this week, triggering mass evacuations and significant destruction. In France, the fires forced 224,000 people to evacuate and destroyed 42,000 hectares of forest.[1] Beyond France's borders, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Greece, and Turkey all faced major fire threats during the same period.[1]
The scale of the crisis prompted international assistance. Australia responded by dispatching specialized firefighting resources to France, including a CH-47D Chinook helicopter equipped with an 11,300-liter water tank and a Bell 412 reconnaissance support aircraft, alongside 24 aerial and ground personnel from New South Wales Rural Fire Service.[1] This deployment marked a reciprocal gesture, as France had previously aided Australia during the country's devastating 2019-2020 bushfire season.[1]
Greece experienced severe fire activity, with 73 fires recorded throughout the week, including 51 that erupted on Friday alone.[1] The crisis claimed lives, with three firefighters killed on the island of Crete.[1] Meanwhile, drought conditions intensified the situation in Britain and Wales, where July rainfall measured 5.6 millimeters and 7.9 millimeters respectively—figures well below the previous record low set in 1911.[1] French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez characterized the situation as having "stabilized, but not completely stopped."[1]
