Governments meeting at the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva have agreed to continue intensive negotiations on a proposed global pandemic agreement, with plans to refine the draft before the 77th World Health Assembly begins on May 27, 2024.[1] The discussions, conducted in both hybrid and in-person formats, addressed key issues including global pathogen access and benefit-sharing, pandemic prevention and One Health approaches, and financial coordination mechanisms.[1]
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that countries have committed to forging a "generational agreement" to protect the world from a repeat of the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] Roland Driece, co-chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) steering committee from the Netherlands, emphasized that the world must be far better prepared for the next pandemic.[1] The negotiation process, which represents the first time governments have undertaken efforts to develop a binding agreement specifically for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response, has followed more than two years of intensive talks.[1] This initiative traces back to March 2021, when leaders from more than twenty countries signed a commitment statement, and was formally launched in December 2021 when WHO member states decided to establish a global process for developing a legally binding agreement.[1]
