G20 health ministers gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to throw their backing behind the World Health Organization's inaugural investment financing initiative 1. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that the organization has secured 63 commitments totaling more than $1 billion in pledges 1. He called on countries to make additional commitments during the G20 leaders' summit scheduled for November 18-19, 2024, to be chaired by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in support of the WHO's new global health strategy aimed at saving 40 million lives 1.
Among the nations and institutions that have already pledged their support are Germany, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, the European Union, and the Wellcome Trust 1. Tedros noted that more than half of the commitments come from first-time voluntary contributors, with many originating from Africa, the Western Pacific, and Southeast Asia regions 1.
