The World Health Organization has launched its inaugural Investment Round, marking a historic step toward sustainable financing for global health operations.[1] Fourteen African countries have pledged more than $45 million to support WHO's core work over the next four years.[1] The participating nations are Botswana, Cape Verde, Chad, Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, and the United Republic of Tanzania.[1]
The Investment Round was initiated in May 2024 during the World Health Assembly, with the goal of establishing a predictable and flexible funding mechanism to strengthen WHO's ability to fulfill its global health mandate.[1] In addition to the African countries' commitments, key international partners have contributed to the initiative, including the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the World Diabetes Foundation, Roche, the Kuwait Arab Fund for Economic Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the African Development Bank, and the WHO Foundation.[1]
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating: "Adequate and sustainable financing will enable WHO to better support countries in building healthier, more resilient and more prosperous populations."[1] Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, underscored the initiative's regional significance, noting that "strong, predictable and sustainable financing for WHO is critical for our region and the world to respond to multiple health threats."[1]
