Luxembourg and the World Health Organization concluded two major partnership agreements on December 20, 2024, marking a significant expansion of their collaboration.[1] The country's Ministry of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs signed a strategic partnership framework agreement valued at €46.5 million—the largest cooperation agreement in WHO's history—while the Ministry of Health and Social Security entered into its first multi-year accord, committing €1 million as Luxembourg's initial voluntary contribution to the organization.[1] These agreements are designed to support priority initiatives including universal health coverage, tropical disease research, polio eradication, and health crisis preparedness and response through 2028.[1]
Luxembourg's Health Minister Martine Deprez emphasized that the contribution "will help finance priority areas in Luxembourg's collaboration with WHO, notably for sanitary crisis preparedness and response and the fight against health inequalities, with a special focus on gender."[1] Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel underscored Luxembourg's sustained commitment, stating that "by signing two new partnership agreements, we have reaffirmed Luxembourg's continued support for the WHO and its mission."[1] WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus characterized the agreements as "a strong statement of solidarity by Luxembourg, not just with WHO, but with the people of the world," noting that the signing took place on International Day of Solidarity.[1]
