Sydney Theatre Company has launched a new theatrical production titled Bennelong, created by playwright Jane Harrison, exploring the remarkable story of Bennelong, the first Indigenous Australian to travel to Europe, and his encounter with a contemporary performer named Sebastian Anderson.[1] The play employs metatheatrical techniques to blend comedy with historical depth while examining themes including Black masculinity and the dialogue between past and present.[1]
The production features performances by Googoorewon Knox in the role of Bennelong and Guy Simon as Sebastian Anderson, both of whom have garnered high critical acclaim.[1] The show runs at Wharf 1 from July 24 to August 16, marking the first time in recent years that Sydney Theatre Company has premiered a new work by Harrison.[1]
