Law enforcement agencies across the United States are increasingly turning to podcasts as a tool to investigate unsolved murders and generate leads from the public.[1] The strategy has already yielded notable results in several cases, demonstrating the potential of this emerging investigative approach.
Police in California used a podcast to assist in capturing fugitive Peter Chadwick, who was found after nearly four years on the run and arrested in Mexico in August 2019.[1] In Illinois, a state police podcast led to the discovery of Karen Shepers' remains in a river within weeks of the broadcast, more than 40 years after her disappearance, with confirmation of her identity occurring in March 2025.[1] Colorado's Aurora Police Department released a podcast about the 2016 murder of Chelsea Yazel, a 21-year-old who was stabbed in a shopping mall parking lot, a case that had remained unsolved for a decade.[1] The Aurora department's podcast was downloaded 7,184 times by late July and generated multiple investigative leads.[1] Peter Chadwick ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of 15 years to life imprisonment.[1]
Police departments are deliberately leveraging the widespread audience for true crime content through these podcasts, according to Joe Moylan, a public information officer at the Aurora Police Department.[1] Retired New York Police Department detective Michael Alcarez stated: "I think it is a tool that everyone will eventually adopt,"[1] reflecting expert confidence that this trend remains in its early stages but will become increasingly common in law enforcement investigations.[1]
