The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced a major fashion exhibition dedicated to British designer John Galliano, marking him as the third living designer to receive such a retrospective from the museum's Costume Institute.[1] The exhibition, titled "John Galliano: Horizons," will run from May 9, 2027, to January 9, 2028, and will deliberately address both his creative achievements and the serious misconduct that marked his career.[1]
Galliano's history includes nearly 15 years as creative director of Christian Dior, during which he became one of fashion's most influential designers.[1] However, his tenure ended abruptly following antisemitic and racist remarks he made in 2010 and 2011, for which he was convicted.[1] He subsequently joined Maison Margiela as creative director in 2014, a position he held for ten years.[1]
The exhibition will be structured in three parts to navigate this complex legacy.[1] The first section, titled "Bearings," will directly confront his misconduct, while "Horizons" will examine his creative influences, and "Atlas of Transformation" will showcase his technical innovation and artistic evolution.[1] Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, stated: "We believe John Galliano has genuinely addressed the issues that led to his antisemitic outburst in Paris years ago, and we accepted his apology long ago."[1]
