Sean Grayson, a former Illinois deputy sheriff, has been denied medical parole following his 20-year prison sentence for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey.[1][2] The Illinois Prisoner Review Board unanimously rejected his request on Friday, with all three board members voting against release.[1][2] Grayson, diagnosed with colon cancer that has metastasized to his liver and lungs, filed for medical release approximately six months into his sentence.[2]
Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder in October 2024 for shooting Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman, in the face while responding to her 911 call reporting a suspicious intruder at her home.[2] Body camera footage documented the incident, showing Grayson and another deputy entering Massey's residence as she was moving a pot of boiling water from the stove, moments before she said to Grayson: "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus."[2]
Officials and the victim's representatives opposed the medical release. Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milhiser stated that Grayson's medical condition had already been considered during sentencing, and releasing him would constitute "a miscarriage of justice."[2] Lawyers representing the Massey family, Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, affirmed that the board had "made the right decision."[2] Governor JB Pritzker characterized the killing as "a profound loss" and noted that "too many innocent Black Americans have suffered this kind of violence."[2]
