Australia's major banks are significantly reducing rewards and benefits on premium credit cards before a new interchange fee cap takes effect in October 2026, driven by anticipated revenue declines from the swipe fee reduction. [1]
ANZ has cut sign-up bonuses on its Frequent Flyer Black Card from 130,000 to 80,000 Qantas points, while simultaneously raising the minimum spending requirement from A$5,000 to A$6,000 over the first three months and eliminating a A$200 cash rebate. [1] The bank's Frequent Flyer Platinum Card sign-up bonus dropped from 75,000 to 40,000 points, with the minimum spending threshold increasing from A$2,500 to A$3,500. [1]
NAB has restructured its rewards programs more drastically, reducing the points redemption rate on its Qantas Rewards Premium Card from 1 point per A$1.50 to 1 point per A$2 for the first A$3,000 in monthly spending. [1] The bank also capped monthly rewards on its standard Rewards Card at A$15,000 (down from A$20,000), introducing tiered earning that awards 1.25 points per dollar on the first A$5,000 of monthly charges and 0.5 points thereafter. [1] Additionally, NAB raised purchase and cash advance interest rates to 22.49 percent and 22.99 percent respectively, and converted the Rewards Travel Card from a A$35 monthly fee to a A$395 annual fee with the elimination of monthly fee waivers. [1]
Westpac has narrowed the coverage of complimentary travel insurance on its Altitude card, restricting benefits to medical expenses, domestic travel protection, and car rental coverage while removing provisions for trip cancellation, delays, and baggage claims. [1] These changes follow the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision to cut interchange fee rates by 63 percent, from 0.8 percent to 0.3 percent, effective October 1, 2026. [1]
