Kate Gudinski has pivoted from pop stardom to entrepreneurship, launching a fashion accessories brand called UBU in 2025 alongside co-founder Sally Dobell.[1] The 38-year-old, who released three albums as Kate Alexa between 2006 and 2012, had previously pursued a recording career in the 2000s before shifting her focus to fashion.[1]
The brand emerged from a personal need: "We both felt we could never find good-quality hats that were stylish, or ones that our kids would actually want to wear," Gudinski explained.[1] UBU began with children's hat designs and has since expanded into a cross-generational product line.[1] The company operated a pop-up store in Melbourne's Albert Park during 2024 before its official 2025 launch.[1]
Gudinski's career transition gained momentum following her father Michael Gudinski's death in 2021, which coincided with her birthday.[1] Her father was a music industry titan who co-founded Mushroom Records in 1972.[1] As a mother of three children, the oldest now 10 years old, Gudinski has channeled her entrepreneurial energy into building the UBU brand in the Australian fashion market.[1]
