Big White Ski Resort in British Columbia's Valemount Highlands has become recognized as a model for what an ideal ski destination should offer.[1] The resort receives an average of 750 centimeters of annual snowfall and operates for approximately five months each season.[1] Located just 55 minutes from Kelowna Airport, the facility features 54 percent intermediate terrain alongside tree-lined runs, making it accessible to a wide range of skiers.[1]
The resort's distinctive character stems from its family-owned operational model.[1] The Schumann family, who operated a ski school and cable car business at Mount Hotham in Australia during the 1980s, acquired Big White when patriarch Desmond Schumann purchased the property for one Canadian dollar while assuming approximately 4.5 million Canadian dollars in debt.[1] Today, the resort remains independently operated by the family rather than dominated by major hotel brands, with accommodations consisting entirely of small family-run businesses.[1] Peter Plimmer, Desmond Schumann's grandson, currently serves as chief executive officer.[1] The resort offers complimentary 90-minute guided tours departing daily at 10:15 a.m. led by mountain hosts.[1]
