A UK High Court judge has dismissed a legal challenge seeking to block a clinical trial involving puberty blockers for young people.[1] Judge Chamberlain rejected an application for judicial review, allowing researchers at King's College London to proceed with the study.[1] The trial, known as Pathways, is scheduled to begin recruiting participants on August 1st and aims to enroll more than 220 children aged 11 to 16.[1]
The research has already received approval from the Health Research Authority (HRA) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).[1] Participants will undergo specialist medical assessments lasting several months before enrollment.[1] The trial was initiated following a 2024 review of gender identity services conducted by Dr. Cass, after which the NHS discontinued its previous practice of prescribing puberty blockers.[1]
Keira Bell, a former user of puberty blockers who later discontinued them, expressed disappointment with the court's ruling, stating: "the court's refusal to allow this challenge to proceed is a tragedy."[1]
