Britain's High Court on Friday rejected a legal challenge to China's planned new embassy in London, dismissing concerns raised by local residents.[1] The Royal Mint Community Residents Association (RMCRA) had opposed the project citing risks of terrorist attacks, human rights violations, and security concerns, but the court found the organization had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support its claims.[1]
China purchased the former Royal Mint site near the Tower of London in 2018 for $327 million to construct what would become Britain's largest embassy.[1] The proposed diplomatic compound spans approximately 20,000 square meters (235,000 square feet).[1] The court determined that the residents' association had not presented "reasonable and persuasive evidence" to demonstrate that the project would result in human rights abuses against its members.[1]
Luke Pollard, the RMCRA's representative, responded to the ruling by stating that the decision is not final, as an appeal is already underway.[1]
