Pakistan's military dismissed a United Nations report documenting 499 civilian deaths and 1,216 injuries from cross-border military operations conducted between October and June.[1] At a press briefing, Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, a military spokesperson, characterized the allegations as "baseless," asserting that all targeted strikes were directed exclusively at positions and infrastructure used by the Pakistani Taliban and that all casualties were armed combatants.[1]
The military presented its own operational statistics to counter the UN findings.[1] Pakistan recorded 3,145 terrorist incidents since January, resulting in 2,084 militants killed, while 819 Pakistanis—comprising soldiers, police officers, and civilians—were killed during the same period.[1] Security forces conducted 40,348 intelligence operations and documented 28 suicide attacks carried out by militants based in Afghanistan.[1] The military characterized its cross-border actions as defensive measures against threats originating from Afghan territory.[1]
The escalation of Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions follows the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.[1] Conflict intensified in February when Afghan forces launched retaliatory cross-border raids into Pakistan.[1] In March, a Pakistani airstrike on a rehabilitation facility in Kabul resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths.[1]
