Beyond climate dynamics, widespread monoculture forest management across Europe has rendered many regions particularly vulnerable to rapid fire propagation. In France's Landes de Gascogne forest, over three-quarters of the area consists of maritime pine, a species planted on Napoleon III's orders in 1857.[1] Spain's situation is similarly problematic, with approximately 3 million hectares of former agricultural and pastureland converted to fast-growing pine and eucalyptus plantations during and after Franco's era between 1939 and 1975.[1] Portugal's eucalyptus forests account for more than one-quarter of the country's total forest area.[1] According to Doug Kelley, a land surface modeler at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, "some fires in France and Spain have occurred in areas with highly flammable tree species that grow densely together, causing flames to spread very rapidly."[1]
To mitigate future catastrophes, experts recommend a multi-pronged approach centered on emissions reduction, forest diversification, and preventive forest management practices.[1] Silvia Abruscato, coordinator of FoRISK, emphasized that "we need to manage forests well to prevent such large-scale disasters from occurring. So prevention, prevention, prevention" is essential.[1]
