Smith's connection to the Vatican extends back years.[1] She first met Pope Francis in 2013 and performed for him in 2014.[1] Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025, and Pope Leo XIV's election anniversary falls on May 8.[1] On that same date, Smith performed at the opening ceremony of the Holy See's pavilion at the Venice Biennale.[1]
