China's National Energy Administration announced a significant milestone in the country's energy transition, with coal-fired electricity generation accounting for 49.7% of total power output in the first half of the year—marking the first time this share has dropped below 50% [1]. Renewable energy generation reached 41.2% of overall electricity production, also surpassing the 40% threshold for the first time [1].
The shift reflects rapid expansion in wind and solar capacity. Combined installed capacity for wind and solar power reached 1.95 billion kilowatts, representing a 16.8% increase compared to the same period last year [1]. These two sources generated over 1.2 trillion kilowatt-hours, equivalent to approximately one-quarter of total national electricity consumption [1]. By the end of 2025, China's total renewable energy installed capacity reached 2.34 billion kilowatts [1], with cumulative grid-connected wind and solar installations for the first time exceeding 1.8 billion kilowatts—a capacity roughly equivalent to 82 Three Gorges Dam facilities combined [1].
