China's struggling economy is reshaping educational choices among high school graduates, with an increasing number of top-performing students turning toward military and police academies as well as civil service positions.[1] The shift reflects widespread employment challenges, as youth unemployment reached 15 percent in June, and a Beijing University survey found that over one-third of graduates from prestigious universities and more than 40 percent from ordinary institutions have failed to secure full-time employment.[1]
Military and police academies have become highly competitive destinations, offering substantial advantages including free tuition and guaranteed civil service positions upon graduation.[1] Admission standards have reached historic highs, with some programs at the Chinese People's Public Security University requiring entrance exam scores of at least 652 points on the national gaokao, which has a maximum score of 750 points.[1] According to the Defense Ministry, students admitted to military academies this year ranked among the top 6 percent of provincial exam takers on average.[1] The career prospects are attractive compared to private sector opportunities: base-level police officers in Shanghai earn annual salaries exceeding 220,000 yuan, significantly outpacing the average private enterprise employee salary of approximately 114,000 yuan.[1] Additionally, over 90 percent of police academy graduates enter the police force through the national recruitment system.[1]
