China's National Development and Reform Commission announced an increase in domestic refined oil prices effective July 31 at midnight, marking the tenth adjustment in 2026.[1] Gasoline prices rose by 685 yuan per ton while diesel increased by 655 yuan per ton, translating to per-liter increases of 0.54 to 0.57 yuan for gasoline and 0.56 yuan for diesel.[1]
The price adjustment will have measurable impacts across consumer and commercial segments.[1] A private vehicle with a 50-liter fuel tank will spend approximately 27 yuan more to fill up with 92-octane gasoline, while a compact car traveling 2,000 kilometers monthly with fuel consumption of 8 liters per 100 kilometers will face roughly 40 yuan in additional fuel costs before the next pricing adjustment window opens on August 14.[1] Heavy-duty trucks covering 10,000 kilometers per month with fuel consumption of 38 liters per 100 kilometers will see fuel costs rise by approximately 993 yuan per vehicle over the next two weeks.[1]
The escalation stems from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and maritime security challenges.[1] Middle East geopolitical conflicts, attacks on oil tankers, decreased traffic through strategic sea lanes, and heightened instability in the Red Sea have collectively driven up global crude oil prices.[1] By year-end, China's refined oil price adjustments are expected to follow a pattern of ten increases, four decreases, and one freeze.[1]
