Australian actress Charlotte MacInnes lost her defamation lawsuit against American star Rebel Wilson following a bitter dispute over social media posts. [1][2] Federal Court Judge Elizabeth Raper ruled on Wednesday that MacInnes failed to prove the published statements caused or were likely to cause serious harm. [1]
MacInnes had sued Wilson over Instagram posts made between 2024 and 2025, alleging they falsely implied she was a liar and traitor who withdrew a sexual harassment complaint for professional gain. [2] The posts were directed at Wilson's 11 million followers. [1] The dispute centered on a bathing incident that occurred at Bondi Beach in September 2023. [2]
During the trial, Wilson testified that she is "known as a truth-teller." [1] The case involved film producer Amanda Ghost and Wilson's self-directed movie The Deb, in which MacInnes appeared as an actress. [1][2]
Judge Raper found that "MacInnes changing the story does not constitute defamation." [2] The court ordered MacInnes to pay Wilson's legal costs. [2] The three-week trial took place earlier this year. [2]
MacInnes had sought aggravated damages, claiming she suffered anxiety and periods of unemployment as a result of the posts. [1]
