The UN Security Council held its first indicative vote on July 30 to assess seven candidates vying for the position of UN Secretary-General, marking a critical phase in the selection process.[1] The voting took place behind closed doors, with results to be communicated by the nominating countries of each candidate.[1]
Voters were presented with three options: to encourage, discourage, or abstain from expressing an opinion on each candidate.[1] The selection process, which began in November of the previous year, is expected to conclude by September or October 2026.[1] The current Secretary-General's term, held by Guterres, expires on December 31, 2026.[1] The vote was conducted under the presidency of the Democratic Republic of Congo's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ngele.[1] Following regional rotation conventions, candidates from Latin America are considered to have an advantage, while the international community has also called for the election of the first female Secretary-General.[1]
