Human Rights Watch has accused Russia-backed forces of carrying out an airstrike in central Mali that killed eight civilians, including three children, on June 15.[1] The attack targeted the village of Kinaria in the Mopti region, with two bombs dropped by a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jet striking the village chief's residence and a livestock market, according to the organization's investigation.[1] The village chief's wife and three of his children were killed in the first strike, while four men died in the second attack.[1]
The rights group based its findings on interviews with 19 witnesses, satellite imagery analysis, and video evidence, but found no reports of armed combatants being killed in the strikes.[1] Kinaria has been under the control of the Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) militant group for six years.[1] Human Rights Watch has called on the Malian government to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.[1] Russia's defense ministry has not yet responded to the allegations.[1]
