An avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram Range has claimed lives among a group of international climbers. Pakistani rescue teams, assisted by military helicopters, discovered four bodies on Friday following the incident that occurred Thursday around midday at approximately 6,600 meters (21,650 feet) elevation.[1]
At least ten mountaineers went missing in the disaster, including renowned British climber Nirmal Purja, along with climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the United States, and China.[1] The expedition comprised five Nepali climbers, Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, Omani climber Nathira, American climber Mallory Geis, Chinese climber Wang, and other international participants, supported by three Sherpa guides from Seven Summits Treks.[1] According to Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the Alpine Club, the team had been unable to communicate since Thursday.[1]
Broad Peak, located in the Karakoram Range, stands at over 8,000 meters in elevation and ranks as the world's twelfth highest mountain.[1]
