A major wildfire on the Suffolk coast has burned approximately 150 hectares (370 acres, equivalent to 210 football pitches) of Dunwich Heath since igniting on Wednesday afternoon at around 5 p.m.[1] More than 100 firefighters have been engaged in suppressing the blaze, with 12 fire engines stationed overnight as conditions gradually stabilise.[1] Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service stated that despite the fire's dynamic nature, the situation remains stable and "we are making good progress."[1]
About 50 residents have been evacuated from residential properties and holiday parks to Westleton as a precautionary measure.[1] The wildfire lies only several miles from Sizewell B, Britain's largest nuclear power station, though an EDF Energy spokesperson confirmed the fire does not affect the plant's operations.[1] The region's vulnerability to rapid fire spread has been exacerbated by exceptional dry conditions, with Suffolk receiving only 2 percent of its average July rainfall.[1] Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged that the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service would receive "full support," while Green Party leader Zack Polanski called for an emergency Cobra meeting to address wildfires across the country.[1]
