A 44-year-old British-Azerbaijani man has been arrested in Cyprus on charges of conducting surveillance on behalf of Iran against a British military installation.[1] Rashad Sultanov, a London taxi driver, was detained on July 17, 2025, and is accused of conducting hostile surveillance of RAF Akrotiri and sharing information with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.[1]
British police have authorized prosecutors to bring charges under the National Security Act and are pursuing his extradition.[1] The investigation centers on events that occurred at RAF Akrotiri during May and June 2025.[1] Akrotiri serves as a major British air base in the Middle East and has been used in recent military operations against ISIS and Houthi forces.[1] The base came under attack from Iranian-manufactured drones in March 2025.[1] Britain designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a banned organization earlier this month.[1]
