The 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forestry Ministers' Meeting took place in Shenzhen on July 27-28 [1]. During the conference, Chinese and international journalists visited two key biodiversity conservation sites in Luohu District to examine innovative approaches to protecting ecological diversity in a high-density urban environment [1].
The delegations toured the Xianhu Botanical Garden, which houses over 13,000 plant taxonomic groups, including more than 8,000 wild plant species, and welcomes an average of over 4 million visitors annually [1]. They also visited the Shenzhen Orchid and Fern Plant Protection Research Center, established in 2006, which preserves more than 5,600 living orchid and fern species representing over 5 million individual plants [1]. The center has successfully developed artificial propagation techniques for over 700 species of orchids and ferns, enabling the successful reintroduction of more than 20 endangered species into the wild [1].
Since 2023, Luohu District has completed forest structure optimization on 509.06 acres, forest tending on 1,945.36 acres, and maintenance of newly planted forests on 796.10 acres [1]. Li Wangxian, a journalist from Hong Kong Da Gong Wen Hui Media, stated: "Ecological cooperation between Hong Kong and Shenzhen continues to advance, and we hope that through the APEC meeting, the two regions can explore more possibilities for ecological collaboration" [1].
