BP announced Friday the formal launch of a sales process for its North Sea oil and gas business, marking the end of the company's 60-year presence in the region.[2] New Chief Executive Meg O'Neill, who assumed her role on April 1, 2025, framed the divestment as part of a broader portfolio streamlining strategy aimed at reducing debt and redirecting capital toward higher-value opportunities.[2] "The North Sea business will be better positioned as part of another company," O'Neill stated.[2]
BP's operations in the North Sea trace back to 1964, when the company secured its first UK North Sea license, followed by the discovery of the West Sole gas field in 1965 and the larger Forties oil field in 1970.[2] Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh emphasized the government's commitment to the process, saying she had made clear to BP that "my priority is to ensure that workers and local communities are protected throughout the sales process."[2]
